The Deutsche Schule Ann Arbor (DSAA / German School Ann Arbor) is a Saturday school, founded in 2008 by a group of dedicated parents with only nine students and has grown to approximately 150, at present. Yvonne Stevens, principal and co-founder of the DSAA, remembers that in 2007 she could not find appropriate German classes for her school-aged children, and the idea of founding a German school was born.
DSAA is recognized as a language diploma school by the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad in Germany and was certified in 2019 to proctor the highest level of exams, the German Language Certificate II (Deutsches Sprachdiplom II). The DSAA aims to promote in its students the knowledge of the German language with the help of traditional methods as well as extracurricular activities. Teaching the language is only one of the school’s goals. In addition, we seek to introduce students to the cultural heritage of German-speaking countries and their role in the global economy. With our many celebrations and extracurricular activities, the German School Ann Arbor offers a colorful potpourri of exciting events.
The DSAA offers classes from preschool to 12th grade which take place Saturdays from 9:30am to 12:00pm at Washtenaw Community College, 4800 E. Huron River Drive Ann Arbor, MI 48105-4800
The classes are based on the curriculum of the state of Baden-Württemberg as well as on the “Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)”. The lessons are taught in small classroom settings with an average of eight students. The small class size allows teachers to meet the individual needs of the students and tailor lessons accordingly.
In order to meet the different backgrounds and situations of students, each grade is divided into two classes: “German as a mother tongue” (DaM) and “German as a foreign language” (DaF). Both classes are taught in German
